Full winding. Thin temples. Arched eyebrows. Integrated side guards. Adjustable, ventilated nasal pads. Bioacetate frames. Recycled fishing net frames. Recycled plastic frames. Coating for Tri-Pel lenses. Bio-based polarized lenses. Sport hinges. Spring hinges.
The list could go on for pages, describing all the features and options available nowadays for buying sunglasses – now models are being created not only for use on the water, but especially for use in fresh or salt water, as well as while sailing and fishing in inland or offshore waters.
Some brands go so far as to focus on specific species when describing new sunglasses options. Bajio, for example, announcing his Zapata model, told the following story: “This frame was named after the Zapata swamp in Cuba. Felipe, a local legend, lives there and teaches the children to fly fish in the streets. This swamp is infested with allowed fish, bonefish, snook, tarpon, snapper, and barracuda. They’re eager to eat whatever is in front of them, so we’ve created a frame where you can feed them.”
Polarized lenses and ultraviolet protection are standard features in today’s performance glasses, as are hydrophobic and oleophobic lens coatings that repel water, sunscreen, and more, both on the boat and on the beach. At the same time, there are significant differences between, say, the need for the best lens and frame shape to observe fish in shallow waters and the need for the best midday glare protection on a flybridge covered in bright white gelcoat.
The basics plus shades create a great pair of sunglasses for any activity – all the more reason to have multiple pairs on board.
