For as long as U.S. presidents have existed, they have sought to escape the hot, humid summers and freezing winters of Washington, D.C., in private vacation retreats across the country. John F. Kennedy spent time at his family’s compound in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts; Harry Truman was going to the so-called Little White House in the Florida Keys; and Herbert Hoover went to Camp Rapidan in the Blue Ridge Mountains of West Virginia. During his presidency, Barack Obama and his family frequently spent their vacations in Hawaii, his hometown.

One of the former rental properties, located in a gated enclave along Kailua Beach, where the former commander-in-chief signed the 9/11 First Responder Act, is still accepting short-term rentals. For those looking for a more permanent home, however, this alternative just down the street, where the Obamas first vacationed in 2011, is now for sale for $14.9 million. Overlooking the ocean through a 33-meter façade, the private, Balinese-Hawaiian-inspired property sits on more than three thousand square feet of land near the Hawaii Marine Corps Base on Kaneohe Bay and offers panoramic views of Kailua Bay and the Mokulua Islands.

Up to six cars can be parked in the spacious driveway covered by a two-car garage, while the Eden-like interior courtyard in front of the wooden front doors is home to a lagoon-style saltwater pool and spa, complete with a waterfall. An airy porch, an essential feature of Hawaiian residences for gatherings with friends and family, stretches along the pool and hot tub, flanked by an abundance of palm trees, croton plants, and other tropical vegetation.
Stone walkways and a short attic lead to the main living areas of the newly renovated single-storey residence, where high beamed ceilings surround both the living room and the dining room. Large glass doors open one side of the room to the courtyard and pool, and the other to a covered terrace overlooking the ocean. A spacious kitchen is set up around a large snack bar, an island, and an outdoor dining space by the pool can accommodate twelve guests, next to a summer kitchen.
Four of the five bedrooms have access to the gardens, and an extendable bathtub and a luxurious paneled dressing room are outstanding features of the master suite. There is also a fully equipped gym right next to the garage.
