A nautical tribute: Glashütte S.A.R. Mission-Timer “160 Years of DGzRS”

Mühle-Glashütte

Limited edition diver’s watch from Mühle-Glashütte for the 160th anniversary of the DGzRS – nautical design, robust engineering, includes one donation per piece.

In 2025, the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS) marks two important milestones: 160 years of life-saving operations in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea and 150 years since their iconic donation boxes. To commemorate this extraordinary double anniversary, Mühle-Glashütte presents a special limited edition of its professional diving watch: the S.A.R. Mission-Timer “160 years of DGzRS”. Limited to just 160 pieces, this commemorative watch not only celebrates a legacy of maritime service, but contributes directly to it – €100 from each sale going to support DGzRS’s vital, independently funded rescue missions.

Engineering meets emotion: a watch with story and substance

Robust yet refined, the “160 Years of DGzRS” edition is housed in a 43mm titanium case that emphasizes performance and wearability. Weighing around 105 grams, it’s surprisingly lightweight despite its wristwatch credentials. The case features a unidirectional ceramic bezel and a 2.5 mm thick double-coated anti-reflective sapphire crystal – ensuring optimal readability and strength in harsh environments.

The bolt-on crown and 50 bar water resistance complete the specifications for serious marine use. At the heart of this model beats the SW 400-1 automatic mechanism, modified and finely tuned by the German brand. Equipped with the hammer-shaped regulator and custom rotor, the mechanism is adjusted in six positions and adjusted at a daily rate from 0 to +8 seconds.

A dial that tells a deeper story

What sets this anniversary edition apart is its striking dial, which combines technical clarity with meaningful design. The titanium-gray matte surface is etched with a fine-line structure – representing isobates, or underwater topographic contours, of the Weser estuary, near Bremerhaven, the location of the German maritime rescue coordination center. It is a discreet and complex detail, which subtly roots the watch in the waters that DGzRS has patrolled for generations.

Red accents make symbolic appearances throughout: the top of the central secondary is painted in DGzRS’s signature rescue red, while the hour markers, white by day, glow navy blue at night and reveal a purple hue under UV light. This playful but intentional color change makes a sign of appreciation of the organization’s identity in a discreet and convincing way. “More than 1,000 maritime rescuers from 60 rescue units are deployed about 2,000 times a year – non-stop, in all weather conditions, financed exclusively by voluntary donations, without state or public funds,” say Mühle-Glashütte.

A protective cover engraved with a purpose

Turn the clock and the commemorative elements become fully visible. The titanium protective cover is deeply engraved with the familiar image of the collection craft – a miniature donation vessel that represented DGzRS for 150 years and played a key role in its local funding model. The engraving also features the jubilee inscription: “150 years of Sammelschiffchen. 160 years of DGzRS – Maritime Rescuers”, together with the individual number of the limited edition of the watch.

The collaboration between Mühle-Glashütte and DGzRS dates back to 2002, with the development of the original S.A.R. Rescue-Timer. Since then, Mühle has consistently delivered watches built to meet the exacting standards of professional rescue operations at sea – and this latest limited edition carries on that legacy.

Precision with purpose

True to its wristwatch DNA, the S.A.R. Mission-Timer “160 years of DGzRS” offers superb readability and usability in every detail. A large format date display – about 30% larger than the standard – ensures quick readability without the need for a magnifying glass. Applied indices and bold orientation markings at 3, 6, 9 and 12 o’clock reflect the high-contrast design language established by previous models in the S.A.R. family.

The integrated black rubber strap, fastened with a foldable titanium buckle and diving extension, provides ergonomic comfort for everyday wear or over a wetsuit. Meanwhile, screw-down strap bars reinforce the watch’s robust construction and reliability.
