The 1992 Mazda RX-7 FD from the franchise’s third film, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, sold for over $1 million at a Bonhams auction. The vehicle is one of two that survived filming in 2005.
The Tokyo Drift RX-7, sometimes known as the RX-7 VeilSide Fortune, is probably one of the most iconic cars to appear in a Fast & Furious movie. The custom sports car is owned by Sung Kang’s character Han Seoul-Oh, and appears prominently in the more spectacular street racing sequences in the third film and makes a brief appearance in the post-credits scene of Fast & Furious 6.
Mazda RX-7 VeilSide Fortune, one of the survivors
The car sold at auction is one of nine built for filming, only two of which survived production, according to Bonhams. It was not used for any of the film’s eponymous drift sequences, which could explain why the beloved Japanese import car is still in working order to this day. However, it appears on the screen because it was used to shoot several close-ups and still shots throughout the film.
Han’s RX-7 gets its name from the wide-bodied Veilside body kit. This change, together with the two-tone House of Kolor paint in black and metallic orange, explains to some extent why it is so popular. As it is a movie car, technical specifications are hard to find, but the most powerful version of the RX-7 in 1992 was powered by a 1.7-liter twin-turbo 13B rotary engine, which produced 255 hp. However, some VeilSide improvements could have given the car a significant increase in performance.
Sold for $1.22 million
For this reason, it’s no wonder that the car sold for £911,000 (or just over $1.22 million) at Bonham’s Goodwood Festival of Speed auction. The maximum price was the third highest reached during the annual auction. This also makes the RX-7 one of the most expensive Fast & Furious cars ever sold at auction. The only car in the franchise that has sold more is a 1999 Nissan R34 Skyline GT-R, which belonged to the late Paul Walker. That car sold for $1.36 million at the 2023 auction.
