At Seatrade Cruise Global, MEYER WERFT brings to the fore a new concept that could radically redefine the cruise industry. The “Vision” project introduces the idea of the first all-electric cruise ship, of more than 80,000 GT, capable of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 95%.
More than a theoretical exercise, the concept is presented as a solution based on already available technologies, with potential for implementation in a relatively near horizon.
Electric cruising becomes possible
Project “Vision” proposes a 275-meter-long vessel with a capacity of approximately 1,856 passengers, designed to operate on regional routes using exclusively electricity. The battery system, supplied by Corvus Energy, makes it possible to cover popular European itineraries, such as the Barcelona – Civitavecchia route.
As the charging infrastructure develops — estimates indicate around 100 European ports equipped by 2030 — this type of operation is becoming more and more realistic.

Existing technology, applied on a large scale
A central element of the project is the fact that it is not based on speculative technologies, but on solutions already validated in the maritime sector. Corvus Energy is one of the global leaders in ship battery systems, with extensive experience in hybrid and all-electric projects.
For operational flexibility, the concept can also be adapted in a hybrid version, with auxiliary generators, including longer crossings, such as transatlantic ones.
A new architecture for cruise ships
The elimination of main engines and traditional exhaust systems allows for a complete rethinking of the ship’s architecture. With no chimneys and dedicated gas treatment structures, the upper deck can be redesigned to provide open spaces with unobstructed visibility.
The concept also includes fully glazed and weather-protected areas, turning the ship into an “all-weather ship”. Among the distinctive elements is an indoor aqua park located at the stern, designed for year-round use.
Comfort redefined on board
In addition to the environmental impact, the electric system brings direct benefits to the passenger experience. The absence of conventional engines significantly reduces noise and vibrations, creating an environment closer to that of a luxury hotel than that of a traditional ship.
This transformation underscores the direction the industry is heading: not just sustainability, but also a superior onboard experience.
