The Schmidt Hammer Lassen architecture studio has completed the Grand West Bund Theater in Shanghai, which pays homage to the movement of the Huangpu River and the site’s industrial past.
Located on the banks of the Huangpu River, south of the city center, the theater aims to establish a new cultural landmark for the development of the West Bund, a rapidly developing arts, cultural, and commercial district in Shanghai. The theater is located next to the West Bund Dome, a venue for major events in the world of entertainment and sports, also designed by Schmidt Hammer Lassen, and opened last year.

The Grand West Bund Theater was designed to create a yin-yang interaction with its neighbor. The theater has a sculptural, monolithic form, contrasting with the translucent West Bund Dome, which was adapted from an old cement factory. The use of concrete as the main material of the theater also responds to this industrial history.
Six concave surfaces form the façade of the Grand Theater West Bund, in direct response to the dome’s shape. The design was also designed to make each side of the theater look like the façade of the building. The façade of the theater was decorated with fiberglass reinforced concrete, arranged in a series of horizontal shapes meant to mimic the constant movement of the Huangpu River. A new public square, to the south, will support a continuous rotation of shops and pop-up events.
“Having a location right on the riverfront is extremely privileged,” said Chris Hardie, partner at Schmidt Hammer Lassen. “From there, you become aware of how crowded the river is. It never stands still, but always in motion, slowly carrying boats of similar size to the Grand Theatre building,” he continued. We wanted the West Bund Grand Theatre to represent this.”
