IWC unveils Portugieser Tourbillon Rétrograde Chronograph

IWC

IWC Schaffhausen adds a new level of refinement to its iconic Portugieser line with the launch of the Portugieser Tourbillon Rétrograde Chronograph.

Wrapped in 18-carat Armor gold and paired with a deeply saturated obsidian dial, this complex watch brings together three highly sophisticated complications: a flying minute tourbillon, retrograde date display and flyback chronograph. Ref. IW394009 continues the evolution of IWC’s 2024 design for the Portugieser collection, which has introduced a range of colours that reflect the cycle of day and night: Horizon Blue, Dune, Silver Moon – and here, Obsidian. The Obsidian shade reinforces the depth and gravity of the watch, evoking the twilight silence between day and night.

The 43.5 mm case, buttons and crown are made of IWC’s patented gold alloy. Aptly named Armor Gold, the watch is designed for superior hardness and strength. Its red gold-like luster creates a harmonious contrast to the black obsidian dial. Produced in a meticulous 60-step process, it is constructed with 15 layers of clear varnish to create exceptional depth and visual richness. Gold-plated hands and solid gold appliqués complete the exquisite Portugieser style, which serves as a beautiful showcase for the three complications, with the flying tourbillon taking center stage at 6 o’clock. This marvel of micromechanics is made up of 56 individual components, weighing just 0.675 grams. In particular, it features a function to set the time to the second.

In addition to the tourbillon, the Portugieser Tourbillon Rétrograde Chronograph includes a retrograde date indicator between 8 and 11 o’clock, where a hand travels an arc from 1 to 31 before returning at the end of the month. At 12 o’clock, a combined hour and minute totalizer displays the chronograph time, enhanced by a flyback function for consecutive uninterrupted timing events.

Limited edition of 100 pieces

At the heart of the watch is the IWC-manufactured calibre 89900, an automatic movement consisting of 375 components and offering a 68-hour power reserve. This haute horlogerie movement is equipped with a solid gold rotor and is visible through a sapphire cap, revealing decorative finishes including Geneva stripes, circular grain, and blue screws. Limited to 100 pieces, the Portugieser Tourbillon Rétrograde Chronograph is equipped with a black alligator leather strap from Italian leather artisan Santoni and retails for $145,000.
