A flying saucer-like restaurant will be located in Golden Horn Plaza, a waterfront shopping complex created by British studio Foster + Partners in Istanbul.
Described by Foster + Partners as “a luxury commercial marketplace”, Golden Horn Plaza will host premium brands, on a group of interconnected volumes on two floors, with adjustable storefronts and interiors. The ensemble will be positioned so that it overlooks the Golden Horn estuary – the main entrance to the Bosphorus Strait in Istanbul, after which the project is named. By dividing the site into separate but interconnected stores, it is hoped that the development will give rise to a visually layered streetscape that emulates the surrounding waterfront.
“We are delighted to be working on this project, which will breathe new life into Istanbul’s port area with a spectacular luxury retail offering and a wide range of vibrant public spaces,” said studio partner Nicola Scaranaro. “The scale and proportions of the development reflect the city’s maritime industrial heritage – ensuring that it is consistent with its layered historical surroundings,” added studio director Nigel Dancey. “Architecture and landscaping work in harmony to create a year-round cultural and lifestyle destination.”

Foster+Partners co-opted into the Tersane masterplan
According to Foster + Partners, Golden Horn Plaza will be within walking distance of some of the city’s “most notable historical landmarks” and is being created as part of a larger master plan called Tersane. Tersane is transforming 1.6 kilometers of Istanbul’s unused waterfront into a landscaped public promenade with a mix of commercial, residential, and cultural offerings.
In line with this, the Golden Horn Plaza will be designed to be accessible and pedestrian, incorporating shaded walkways between the commercial pavilions. While all of these volumes will be connected, Foster + Partners has designed them with individually tailored features to meet the changing needs of each brand.
On the upper level of the project will be a dramatic cantilevered restaurant with a curved roof that evokes a flying saucer. This floor will also have covered terraces overlooking the estuary.
As part of the project, Foster + Partners is also developing a landscape design that draws inspiration from Istanbul’s historic gardens. It will include a crown of trees and aquatic elements, both used to help cool the site. There will also be a green public square positioned between the square and the waterfront, which will be used as “a new public space for the city”, where public cultural events can be organized.
