Dutch shipyard Oceanco – one of the world’s leading builders of custom superyachts – has been sold to American video game developer and businessman Gabe Newell.
Over the past 15 years, under the leadership of the Barwani family, Oceanco has delivered some of the most iconic yachts in history, including Kaos, Bravo Eugenia and H3 (which won awards for its transformative reconstruction), as well as the top ranked in the hierarchy of the largest sailing yachts, Koru and Black Pearl. The Barwani family, however, will remain “active in the yacht world” through Turquoise Yachts.
Oceanco will continue in the same direction
“Gabe Newell does not enter this world as a financier or strategist, but as a practical visionary who respects the sea, craftsmanship and, above all, the people who make it possible,” reads a statement from the shipyard. “He wants Oceanco to continue what it already does best: put people first.”
“It’s not about buying a yacht company. It’s about connecting to a team and exploring future directions when nothing else holds your own.”
This important acquisition comes at a busy time for Oceanco. The shipyard currently has four major projects under construction, over 80 meters long, according to BOATPro. Among them is the 111-meter-long Y726, which was launched just last month.
