Temsa expands electrification to the marine industry

Temsa

Temsa is one of the main players in the bus industry — not just in Turkey — that has accelerated its transition to electrification. The Turkish bus and coach manufacturer is expanding into BEV marine applications.

The company participated in the Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo, which took place in Amsterdam from June 24 to 26, where it presented its portfolio of battery technologies adapted for marine applications.

Temsa and its path to diversification

Although Temsa is mainly recognized for its electric and hybrid buses, its entry into the maritime segment marks a strategic diversification. At the exhibition, the company showcased energy storage systems designed for a wide range of ship types, highlighting its modular approach to battery integration.

Temsa’s marine solutions currently address three main categories. For high-performance fast boats, the company offers high-C-rate batteries, capable of delivering between 100 kW and 500 kW for short durations. In the leisure segment – including yachts, catamarans and boats between 12 and 50 meters – Temsa supplies auxiliary power systems at 24V and 48V (in 10 kWh modules), as well as traction systems ranging from 200 kWh to 1,000 kWh.

For commercial vessels such as passenger ferries, the company covers propulsion needs from 600 kW to 1,000 kW, with battery configurations ranging from 500 kWh to 2,000 kWh.

Capabilities and Benefits of a System Integrator

The company continues to focus on integrating energy storage systems rather than manufacturing cells. “We do not produce battery cells; we create solutions for energy storage systems,” said Temsa representatives. The battery chemistry currently used is Li-Ion NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt), preferred for its high energy density. However, the company is actively developing LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) based systems and exploring solid-state battery and sodium-ion technologies as part of its future roadmap.

In terms of hybrid configurations, Temsa prioritizes serial hybrid architectures, integrating electricity storage as a fundamental element. “Our main focus is on battery supply,” the company noted, “and we are currently approaching serial hybrid solutions as a first step.”

Temsa CEO Evren Güzel

The Turkish company’s CEO, Evren Güzel, commented: “The electrification of mobility in the maritime sector is essential for a sustainable future. TEMSA complements its technological development with contributions to the wider shift towards electrified mobility. Participating in the Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo is a great honour for us and a clear indication that we are pioneers in transforming electrification in the marine industry.”

At this time, we have far exceeded the supply of batteries to the marine industry. In this regard, we offer our customers 100% electric, series hybrid and parallel hybrid powertrains, offering complete solutions. In addition to our standard solutions, we can produce customized solutions that fully meet customer needs, through our project-specific engineering approach. With the goal of electrifying mobility, we will continue to shape the future of sustainable transport.
